Q: Is it true that you once willingly submitted yourself to science?
A: During upper secondary school, I (re: my parents) had big dreams back then, thus willingly submitting myself into the science stream as it seemed like a foolproof idea (hint: it wasn’t). During Matriculation at Kolej Matrikulasi Labuan, I took pure sciences again. No surprises here. However, when applying for university, at this point it’s clear to me that the only thing I’m relatively good at is language/writing. I applied for several English courses, mass communications and architecture (deep down I still wanted to be an architect) and ended up doing Bachelors in Education TESL with a minor in English Literature.
What was your first job?
I was a part of a cleaning crew for hire during the first two semesters of uni.
You studied something other than the industry you’re now. How did you make the switch?
The transition was pretty painless because, in a way, the nature of my course prepared me for my current role here at Codium Lab. That, and I’ve always found it cool that people do actually write for a living.
Have you won any awards we should be aware/proud of?
I won The Shakespearean Award 2018 for Award’s Night in uni. Please don’t quiz me on his plays or sonnets, though. I don’t even know why I won.

Atiqah Nasran
Senior Designer
A graduate of Universiti Teknologi MARA with a Diploma in Interior Architecture and a Bachelor’s Degree in Art & Design (Hons)(Graphic Design), Atiqah, or better known as NAS, is usually hard at work at Codium thinking up creative concepts and working out the creative planning and execution of visuals for Codium’s various projects. Currently a Senior Designer here, she got her start as a part-time assistant graphic designer at Skala Design Consult. Q: If you weren’t working at your current job, what would you be doing instead?
A: I would probably be an interior designer or full-time artist.
How do you spend your weekends?
Not thinking about work, just enjoying activities with family and friends. Sometimes I’d spend some time alone in a cafe doing illustrations, sipping matcha. Would also do some window shopping or even retail therapy if I have the extra cash!
What got you active in volleyball?
The Japanese anime, Haikyuu!
What movie or TV shows would you recommend people should watch and why?
- Songlap – This is my favourite Malaysian movie. It has a good storyline, amazing actors, and the shots feel dark and real. I like that the movie tells a story based on the reality of life, and inspires empathy towards society.
- The Cave of the Yellow Dog – A Mongolian movie that is so simple yet very beautiful and fulfilling. My favourite scene is when the mother and daughters were cutting their homemade cheese when one of them asks to keep the dog. The mother asked the daughter to bite the palm of her hand, and when she couldn’t do it, the mother told her that, “You can’t have everything that you see.”
One must-read book for you:
The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*** by Mark Manson – Some of the points he mentions are things that I have already been practicing in my life, so I find this book to be very honest. And I appreciate that the style is not so much a motivational approach hahaha!

In fact, I’m going as soon as we’re Covid-free and I’ve saved enough money! Meanwhile, I’m also looking forward to making my own pottery collection of vases for my flower arrangement.

Three books that you think people should read and why.
- Kim by Rudyard Kipling is a breathtaking tale of espionage set in British India that introduces you to interesting stereotypes (I know – oxymoron!) and fascinating locations.
- True At First Light by Ernest Hemingway provides an insight into the writer’s life in his twilight years, the book still unfinished at the time of his suicide.
- Talk To The Snail by Stephen Clarke is a hilarious guide to communicating with the French. If you’re planning to visit Paris, read this book first to understand the people and feel not-so-inferior when you detect that hint of Parisian disdain (because you will).

Have you won any awards we should be aware/proud of?
When I was editor of K-Zone magazine, we won awards for Best Cover Design in the Special Interest and Niche Category at the Magazine Publishers Association (MPA) Malaysia Awards. You may argue that it was mostly the work of the graphic designer, but it’s not easy coming up with attractive cover lines, okay?
